Five Day Water Fast

fasting before and after_preview.jpeg

I have done intermittent fasting and 24 hour fasts for years now so I decided it was time to take the next step and do a block water Fast.  I am a part of Naomi Whittle’s Glow 15 program and there I was introduced to her Fasting with Naomi Facebook page, now called The Real Skinny on Fat.   After learning more about the health benefits of a 5 day water fast and watching a very inspiring video from Dr. Daniel Pompa, I was motivated to do it myself.  For me, part of it was timing.  I had a week with few commitments except for packing for a big trip so I thought I should take advantage of my open schedule and give it a go.  I don’t think anyone should just jump into this kind fast though.   If you have medical issues you should probably be under a doctors supervision.  It is a major detox and reboot to your system so don’t take this kind of fast lightly.  I have been eating a high fat diet, with moderate proteins and a little complex carbs, free from refined sugars so this protocol was not so far reaching for me.  I was also on a doctor supervised intensive detox program a year ago and have since experienced another level heath that I have never felt before so with all off this said, I was ready.  I also wanted to go deeper with this fast and pray for something specific.  After all many religious folks have been fasting for thousands of years in order to seek a closer intimacy with God as well as an act of petition.  So I call this fast, like Dr Daniel Pompa refers to it……Fasting with a Purpose.

So here we go….5 days only water with a little added Celtic salt when needed.

Day 1. Weight 143.1 ketone .5

I am motivated and committed.  I will stay strong, focused and I will remind myself of my “why” of doing this.

Today I was fine.  I even had a lunch meeting where they ordered and ate my favorite salad right in front of me while I just sipped on warm water in a teacup.  Because I know I am doing this for 5 days I am able to push right through day 1, where normally a 24hr fast would be a struggle for me.

Day 2. Weight 141.2 ketone .6

I am still committed.  I drank Celtic sea salt in water 3x today and as soon as I drank it I had energy.  It felt like I was drinking soup which was very satisfying.  I feel a sense of calm today.  I am able to focus on smaller tedious tasks that otherwise I couldn’t do.  All in all it was not bad at all today.  I even went to the grocery store but I did struggle when making the kids dinner.  The smells were pretty tempting.  I am so grateful that I am able to do this. I am grateful for my 3 children, my husband and my friends and am grateful for presence of God in my life.  I keep reminding myself to just focus on one day at a time.

Day 3.  Weight 141.2 ketones 1.5

I woke up and checked my Oura ring, knowing that I had not had a great night of sleep.  I was right.  My deep sleep was only 35min and I had several wake ups.  I was also feeling very weak. I immediately drank warm water with Celtic salt and that perked me right up.  Funny thing is that I weighed exactly the same as I did the day before, 141.2 but when I measured my ketones on my keto mojo, my keynote levels were way up , from a .6 the day before to a 1.5 which was amazing and meant I was in full blown ketosis !  Woo hoo!

I gradually had more energy as the day went on.  It is about 10pm right now and I actually felt good enough to do a few exercises in my room before sitting to write this.  I am not hungry or tempted to eat food right now.  I am just a bit anxious about not getting a good nights sleep, Since I am traveling in a few days, I need to make sure I get a high sleep score for the next few nights to keep my immunity up so I don’t get sick .

Day 4. Weight 139.7 keynote level 2.0

Sleep was better because I slept in longer so when I checked my Oura ring I had over 1 1/2 hours of deep sleep which made up for the poor sleep the night before. Today was a true test because I promised to take the kids to the movies, which meant popcorn, m&m’s and also to get ice cream to celebrate their birthdays before we left town. I started the day a little weak but with enough energy to take a nature walk.  We walked on a hilly trail for about 30 minutes and that was enough for me.  I felt that if I sipped on warm water with Celtic sea salt throughout the day I would be fine and be able to get through the temptations that may lie ahead.  It was great to get out.  Watching a movie at the theater was actually a great distraction and by the time got home from our day out it was already dinner time.

Now that I am on day 4 I am already anticipating day 5 and breaking the fast. I am ready to be done but what is keeping me going is knowing all of the wonderful benefits I will experience at the end of 5 days.

Day 5.  Weigh in at 138.7   And ketones 2.5

I can’t tell you how happy I am that this is the last day.  I am ok!!! I drank lots of water this morning.  The warm to hot water with the Celtic sea salt is really getting me through this.  I realized  today that I was starting my period.  OMG!!!!  That means I did this really intense fast and detox during the hardest week of the month for me.  No wonder I was extra moody, but I did it.  I am so proud of myself.  It proved that I really did have discipline and will power over food, which I sometimes doubted in the past.  Now it is 8:48pm and it is time for me to break my fast.  Initially I was debating on whether or not I would wait until the morning to break it but then I decided to do it tonight so I could get some nutrients in me and start tomorrow out a little stronger.

The way you break the fast is super important and I am following Dr. Pompas recommendations of starting with bone broth.  Tomorrow I will have only bone broth, a purred cauliflower soup and some veggies that I roasted.

Day 6.  Breaking the fast, weight 136.6 ketones 3.3

After having the bone broth last night I woke up with great energy and feeling really wonderful.  I had autophatea (from Glow 15 program) and at around noon I had my purred cauliflower soup and the veggies I mentioned before.  I am still drinking lots of water and I will start taking my supplements again today.

I have learned so much about myself on this journey, mentally and physically. Our bodies are miraculous and know exactly what to do under this type protocol.  This was totally worth it for me and I will more than likely do another one sooner than later.  In the meantime I will continue with intermittent fasting and once a week 24hr fasts.

I want to share one last thing with you. Remember how I mentioned earlier about Fasting with a Purpose…..well, my prayer was answered on the last day of my fast.  🙂
